How to play

Texas Hold'em rules

Texas Hold'em is the most popular poker game in the world. Each player gets two private cards, five shared cards are dealt to the middle of the table, and the best five-card hand wins the pot. Here is everything you need to play your first hand.

The goal

Win chips. You win a pot either by having the best hand at the showdown or by betting so that every other player folds.

On YayPoker every table is a freezeout: everyone starts with the same stack, and the last player with chips wins the table and gets a winner certificate.

The button and the blinds

A table has 2 to 10 players. The dealer button marks the last seat to act after the flop, and it moves one seat clockwise after every hand.

The two players to the left of the button post forced bets called blinds: the small blind and the big blind (twice the small blind). With only two players, the button posts the small blind.

YayPoker posts the blinds for you. They start at 10 / 20 and go up about 25% every 10 hands, so games always come to an end.

Hole cards and community cards

Each player is dealt two hole cards that only they can see. Then up to five community cards are dealt face up in three steps: the flop (three cards), the turn (one card) and the river (one card).

Your hand is the best five cards you can make from your two hole cards and the five community cards. You can use both, one or none of your hole cards.

The four betting rounds

  • Pre-flop: after the hole cards. The first to act is the player to the left of the big blind.
  • Flop: after the first three community cards. From here on, the first active player to the left of the button acts first.
  • Turn: after the fourth community card.
  • River: after the fifth and last community card.

A betting round ends when every player still in the hand has put the same amount in the pot, or is all-in.

Your options on each turn

  • Check: pass the action without betting. Only possible when nobody has bet in this round.
  • Bet: put chips in when nobody has bet yet. The minimum bet is one big blind.
  • Call: match the current bet.
  • Raise: increase the current bet. A raise must be at least as large as the previous bet or raise.
  • Fold: give up your cards and any chance at the pot.
  • All-in: bet all your remaining chips. You can always go all-in, even for less than a full call or raise.

YayPoker is played no-limit: you can bet any amount up to your whole stack. An all-in that is smaller than a full raise does not reopen the betting for players who already acted; they can only call or fold.

The showdown

If two or more players are still in after the river betting, they show their cards and the best five-card hand wins the pot. If everyone else folds, the last player wins without showing.

Suits never rank higher or lower than each other: when two hands are exactly equal, the pot is split.

All-ins and side pots

A player who goes all-in can only win, from each opponent, as much as they put in themselves. Any extra chips that other players keep betting go into a side pot that only those players can win.

Example: you go all-in with 100 and two opponents each put in 300. The main pot (300) can be won by any of the three of you; the side pot (400) only by the two opponents.
